In-class courses generally last 4 weeks with lessons set up all around the world. Some of the benefits of classroom lessons are getting teaching practice, foreign language experience, and direct student interaction and exchange.

Combined Course

The combined course gives you the best of both worlds. You can pick up the theory through online lessons. Then, you can put the theory into practice at a training center. Sites are set up across the United States, Europe, and Asia.

The combined course includes 6+ hours of observed teaching practice (OTP). As you go through your teaching practice, an experienced professional trainer gives you feedback to help improve your teaching skills.

Specialized Course

It’s just the TESOL brand that gets me. Unlike the widely popular TEFL certification, some employers are less familiar with TESOL. It’s just a name. But it’s an important one that can confuse employers. We did a study for employers abroad and they are looking for TEFL certification over TESOL, CELTA, or TESL.

Coursework

The modules for MyTEFL are relevant, clear, and well-structured. Instead of focusing on theory, the curriculum is practical and classroom effective. The main difference between the MyTEFL course is how you build your teaching skills. For example, you gain knowledge in classroom management, grammar, and teaching English online. It covers everything from:

Classroom management
Teaching speaking, listening, writing, and reading
Using teaching materials & aids

Lesson planning
Grammar (verb tenses, time, and modals)
Designing testing systems

But the only complaint is that it does not provide any teaching practice or classroom observation. Even the Master Course doesn’t have a teacher practicum with real students and interactive feedback.

One of the great ways to start teaching and traveling is through the MyTEFL internship. They give teachers a unique opportunity to jump right into teaching. Besides that, you get a bit of guidance from professionals before you start as a TEFL teacher. No prior teaching experience is required, but you need to be willing to learn with a positive attitude.

As part of the MyTEFL internship, you get immersed quickly into a foreign country and help shake off some of the culture shock. Once you arrive, you get an orientation within the country of choice.

You get a lot of support throughout the internship so it’s good for absolute beginners. Although MyTEFL internships are limited to just 3 countries (Argentina, Spain, and Thailand), you can still build up your CV/resume and kick start your teaching career.

If you are from the United Kingdom and you want to teach ESL students in your home country, this is the only case that we recommend taking a Government Regulated Level 5 Course. The TEFL Institute of Ireland offers equivalent training to the CELTA program, which is the gold standard for teaching English.

If you’re not familiar with this type of certification, “Level 5” refers to the methodology of the Regulated Qualifications Framework (RQF) in the United Kingdom. A “Level 5 certificate” means that the level of education, knowledge, and skills required to complete the course fulfills this framework, which includes CELTA.
