Coursera TESOL Review
I love Coursera. What you get are top-notch courses from universities around the world. Imagine showing potential future employers that your TESOL certificate is backed by a world-renowned university! You’d be unstoppable! But wait. Not so fast.
It’s just the TESOL brand that gets me. Unlike the widely popular TEFL certification, some employers are less familiar with TESOL. It’s just a name. But it’s an important one that can confuse employers. We did a study for employers abroad and they are looking for TEFL certification over TESOL, CELTA, or TESL.
Another important point is that Coursera is not a dedicated institute for teaching English. You miss out on some of those benefits that you can get from a TEFL provider. You’re left in the dark when it comes to job placement opportunities, reviewing contracts, and salary benefits.
One of the biggest advantages of taking the Coursera TESOL course is the learner outcomes are impressive. For instance, 53% started a new career and 33% got a pay increase for the TESOL certificate course! This speaks volumes to the Coursera TESOL program’s success for graduates.
Throughout the course, students write lesson plans and build their teaching portfolios. They also record themselves teaching. Believe me, a bit of practice helps ease the nerves before getting in front of a real classroom. Finally, students submit their teaching portfolios for expert review.

Pretty decent TESOL course
It’s a decent TESOL course which is centered around theory. I decided to try this one out despite the wide range of options that are available.
The best part is the two Capstone projects. First, you apply all the skills you learned in the first couple lessons by video taping yourself teach a sample lesson. This felt a bit weird to be honest, just recording myself with my phone…
Then, you will learn more theory and put it to the test by recording yourself yet again… which is peer reviewed. Once your coursework is all complete, then you can finally get an ASU 150-hour TESOL Certificate.
I like the fact that it’s from ASU. But the I felt there was a lack of support and your mostly doing this on your own in the wild. It’s all done online through Coursera, which is a decent platform… But I think there are better options out there
