5 Culture Lesson Plans: How to Teach Culture in the Classroom

How do you teach culture in the classroom?

One of the best parts of teaching English abroad is the culture exchange. Let’s not forget that culture exchange is two ways. Not only do your students learn about your culture, but you can learn about theirs.

Here are some ideas for ESL activities you can undertake with your students in these culture lesson plans.

1. Cultural Dictionary

The fine line between cultures across the globe is thinning because of globalization. However, some key cultural differences still remain. What are they?

Culture exchange goes both ways. Not only do your students learn about your culture, but you can learn about theirs. Ask students to write down one culturally significant item about their country and put them all together in a dictionary.

2. Hometown Newspaper

Bring newspapers from your hometown and have your students look through them. How are they different from newspapers in their home country?

From the sports section, which sports are more popular? From the weather section, is it colder or warmer than the average temperatures there? There are endless ESL conversation topics to bring up.

3. Cultural Differences

The fine line between cultures across the globe is thinning because of globalization. However, some key cultural differences still remain. What are they?

For example, how do business people greet in both countries? Is it with a simple handshake or bow? Or maybe both. Compile a list of cultural differences and uncover customs that no longer seem so different.

4. Teacher Quiz

This activity gets your students moving around and is more suitable for children. Around the classroom, tape clues around the class. Students have to walk around and find each clue. Finally, they match answers with clues.

I like to make groups of 2 and appoint one as the secretary and one as the detective. If you want to add an extra challenge set a timer or give prizes to the team that finishes first.

Timeless Timeline Worksheet: History and Invention Timelines

From the start of human civilization, we remember some of the most famous people and inventions. Using this timeline worksheet, students arrange the timeline according to their birth date and the invention year.

From youngest to oldest, the teacher will go through the correct order in the history timelines for kids. For example, paper was invented more than 1300 years earlier than the printing press.

The teacher then helps everyone by giving the correct answers. Further to this, ask questions about inventors:

Who else belongs on the list?
What other inventions are important enough that they should be added?
Or what are future inventions you want to see on this list in the future?

A genuine newspaper from your hometown? If you teach English abroad, your students find it fascinating.

In this Hometown Newspaper activity, you first remove all the headlines. With only the articles, students have to match the headline with the article.

The next part of this newspaper activity is question and answer time.

How’s the weather? What sports are popular? What made the front page? Write it down. Talk about it.

What’s different about it? For example, my students were surprised to see pictures in colors for my hometown newspaper.

Famous Forehead Game: Celebrity Guessing Worksheet

A proven party game that you can use in your classroom? In this activity, all players sit in a circle. Next, give each student a post-it note and a pencil. Then, each player writes down the name of a famous person and passes the note face down to the player on the left.

Finally, each player sticks the note on his/her forehead and everyone takes turns asking “Yes” or “No” questions to find out who they are. (Hence the title of the game “Famous Forehead Game”)

The first player to guess the name on his forehead is the winner. Also, make sure to encourage students to keep on asking questions until they find out the famous person on their forehead.

Have you ever wanted to live in another country just for a sense of culture shock? The purpose of this ESL activity is to transform your class into a cultural exchange.

One of the best parts of teaching English abroad is the cultural exchange between you and where you teach English abroad. And don’t forget that culture exchange is two ways. Not only do your students learn about your culture, but you can learn about theirs.

Ask students to write down one culturally significant item about their country. Ask for volunteers to share. Once you collect all the students’ answers, you can compile everyone’s ideas in a culture exchange dictionary that you can keep in class.

OSECHI: A special kind of lunch box eaten on New Years’ in Japan with each food having a symbolic meaning.

ORIGAMI: It is the art of folding paper into various types of animals, objects, or shapes.
