What is an interjection? An interjection is a word we use to express emotions. For example, “Wow!” shows surprise. They add feelings of shock or excitement to our sentences.

4 Key Points of Interjections

Let’s break down the 4 key points of interjections:

Express Emotions or Surprise: Interjections are like the emojis of language. They help express feelings or reactions, such as joy, surprise, or disappointment. Just like how a smiley can brighten a message, words like “Yay!” or “Oops!” add emotion to our words.

Can Stand Alone or Within Sentences: You can find interjections on their own or even within sentences. Consider the sentence, “Wow, that’s amazing!” “Wow” is the interjection that adds excitement. Meanwhile, “Ouch!” by itself is just as powerful. They’re versatile that way.

Punctuated with Exclamation Points: Often, you’ll see interjections followed by exclamation points. This highlights their emotional punch. For instance, “Aha!” shows a sudden realization of knowing something. Whereas saying, “I understand.” doesn’t have the same feeling of emotion.

Not Grammatically Related to Sentences: Interjections are the free spirits of grammar. They don’t need to connect to the other words in a sentence to make sense. So, while “Alas, I lost my keys” makes sense, “Alas” stands apart. It shares the speaker’s sorrow without affecting the grammar.

No matter what, there are always exceptions to the rule. But these 4 key points are good indicators that you’re working with an interjection.

Let’s go through a couple of examples using interjections to check your understanding.

“Yay! We won the game.”

“Yay!” is the interjection in this sentence. It’s a sudden burst of joy celebrating a victory. This interjection stands alone and is punctuated with an exclamation point. But it’s closely related to the excitement of winning the game.

“Cheers! You did very well.”

The interjection in this sentence is “Cheers!”. We use it to congratulate someone, almost like raising a glass in celebration. The interjection stands on its own but sets a supportive tone for the sentence that follows.

Why Use Interjections?

Even though interjections might seem like small talk, they add a lot to sentences. Remember that language isn’t just about rules and structure. It’s also about expressing our human experiences. That’s why we use interjections in English.

“In,” “on,” and “at” are prepositions of time. Each one helps describe time and place. But how do we use them?

If you look at the diagram above, you’ll notice there are some basic guidelines for using “in,” “on,” and “at”.

As we move from “in” to “on” to “at,” we go from a broad, general sense of place or time to a very specific point. Let us explain in more detail below.

1. Preposition “In”

“In” is the most general. We use the preposition “in” when the boundaries are broader and less defined.

For place, we say within a city (“in Paris”) or an object (“in a box”). Typically, we use “in” for something within a larger area or volume.

Similarly, we use the preposition “in” to represent a longer span of time (“in 2020″). It could even mean months, years, centuries, or seasons.

2. Preposition “On”

“On” is more specific than “in” with a more defined time frame. It suggests a clearer, more direct relationship with a location or time.

For location, we use “on” such as being on a street (“on Main Street”). We can also use it to indicate a surface such as “on the table.”

When we use the preposition “on” for time, it’s also more specific. We can use it for days and dates like “on Monday” or “on Christmas Day.”

3. Preposition “At”

The preposition “at” is the most specific. It pinpoints precise locations such as an exact point within a space or time.

For location, it refers to a specific address like (“at 123 Main St.”). It can also define specific locations, such as “at the corner” or “at the door.”

Learning how to arrange adjectives in English can be tricky. But in general, we follow a particular order. That’s how adjective order works. In this guide, we’ll explore the rules that help you place adjectives in the perfect order.

Order of Adjectives

Did you know that in English, we usually say “a big red balloon,” not “a red big balloon”? It sounds more natural because of the adjective order rule.

When using more than one adjective, we usually follow a particular word order. Here’s a diagram that lists all the order of adjectives.

Imagine building a tower. Each block must go in the right spot. Think of it the same. For example, the adjective “big” comes before “red” in the sentence “a big red balloon”. This is because it follows the order of adjectives.

A Sentence with All Adjectives of Order

Obviously, we’re never going to use all the adjectives in one sentence. That would be too descriptive. But if we did, here’s an example sentence that uses this order:

“She bought a lovely small old round blue Italian leather riding saddle.”

As you can see, the adjectives in this sentence follow a particular order.

The general order is as follows:

Determiner – Articles (a, an, the), numbers, possessives (my, your), demonstratives (this, that)

Opinion – Adjectives that express what someone thinks about something (beautiful, boring, delicious)

Size – Adjectives that describe how big or small something is (big, small, tall)

Age – Adjectives that tell us how old something or someone is (old, young, new)

Shape – Describes the shape of something (round, square, oval)

Color – Describes the color (red, blue, green)

Origin – Tells us where something is from (American, Victorian, Martian)

Material – What something is made from (wooden, metal, cotton)

Purpose – Describes what something is used for, often ending in “-ing” (sleeping bag, riding boots, racing car)

In this example, “She bought a lovely small old round blue Italian leather riding saddle.”:

Determiner: a

Opinion: lovely

Size: small

Age: old

Shape: round

Color: blue

Origin: Italian

Material: leather

Purpose: riding (modifying “saddle”)

As ridiculous as it sounds, this sentence correctly follows the order of adjectives in a sentence. This order tends to sound most natural to native English speakers. Any deviations from it can make a sentence feel awkward or more difficult to understand.

Adjective Order in English

We’ve learned how to put adjectives in order. Putting adjectives in order is like following a recipe to make your sentences clear. It’s about choosing the right spot for each describing word so your message sounds better.

Contractions make sentences shorter and easier to read. For example, “do not” becomes “don’t”. They make writing sound friendly and casual. They’re also common in imperative verb tenses.

Plus, they’re how we often talk in real life. So, using contractions can make your writing feel more natural and relatable.

Why You Shouldn’t Use Contractions

You might avoid contractions for a few reasons. First, in formal writing, like academic papers or business reports, contractions can seem too casual or informal. Contractions can make your writing sound less professional.

Second, when you’re writing for an international audience, it’s clearer to use full forms. This is because contractions might confuse readers who are not as familiar with English.

1. Proper Nouns

Proper nouns are the specific names of people, places, or things. They always start with a capital letter. For example, when we talk about cities like Paris or people like Emma, we’re using proper nouns. They help us pinpoint exactly what or who we’re talking about.

Proper nouns stand out because they show respect and recognition. Using them correctly in writing and speaking shows that we understand and honor the uniqueness of each name. This is why names of days, months, and historical events also use capital letters.

Concrete nouns name things you can touch, see, smell, hear, or taste. They’re all about the physical world. For example, “apple” and “music” are concrete nouns because you can see an apple and hear music. These nouns ground our conversations in reality, talking about actual things around us.

So, when we chat about a “car” or a “flower,” we’re using concrete nouns. They make our words more vivid because they connect with our senses. They help us share our experiences and the world around us in a way everyone can understand.

Abstract nouns are the opposite of concrete nouns. They name things you can’t touch or see. Instead, they’re about ideas, feelings, or concepts. Words like “love,” “freedom,” and “happiness” are abstract nouns. They’re not physical, but they’re very real to us because they describe emotions and ideas that matter in our lives.

These nouns give depth to our conversations and writings. They also allow us to express complex thoughts and feelings. When we talk about “courage” or “time,” these are concepts that don’t have a physical form. But they’re still essential parts of our experience and our inner lives.

Collective nouns are special. They name groups of people, animals, or things as a single entity. For example, a “team” refers to a group of players, and a “flock” refers to a group of birds. These nouns let us talk about many individuals as one unit.

6. Possessive Nouns

Possessive nouns show ownership or belonging. They tell us who or what something belongs to. We often form them by adding an apostrophe and an “s” to the end of a noun, like in “dog’s leash” or “Emma’s book”. This small change signals that the item is owned by someone.

This type of noun is key for expressing relationships and possessions in language. It helps us understand the connections between people and things. For example, saying “the teacher’s pen” instantly shows the pen belongs to the teacher.

7. Countable Nouns

Countable nouns are items you can count. They let us say exactly how many of something we have, like “three cookies” or “ten trees”. You can have one, two, three, or more of them. Countable nouns can be singular or plural, and when they’re plural, we usually add “s” or “es” at the end.

These nouns are great for when we need to be specific about quantities. They help in planning, shopping, and many other activities where numbers matter. For instance, knowing if you have “five apples” helps decide if you can bake an apple pie.

8. Uncountable Nouns

Uncountable nouns are about things you can’t count individually because they’re seen as whole or mass items. Words like “water,” “sand,” and “happiness” are uncountable. They don’t have a plural form and you can’t use “a” or “an” with them. Instead, we talk about these nouns in terms of amount, like “some water” or “a lot of sand.”

These nouns are key for talking about substances, concepts, or feelings that don’t break down into countable units. They help us express ideas about things that are too vast or abstract to count. For example, “air” is essential to life, yet we can’t count it. That means uncountable nouns can often be intangible aspects of our world.

Using Commas in English

Commas in English are like tiny breaks in a sentence, guiding readers through words. While often overlooked, commas play big roles.

From separating items in a list to introducing direct speech, these punctuation marks have diverse uses. So, understanding commas can really polish your writing.

In fact, commas can change the entire meaning of a sentence just by their placement. Now, let’s look at six ways you can use commas to make your writing clearer.

1. Separate Items in a List

Using commas to separate items in a list is like putting spaces between words. It keeps things clear and organized.

“He ate ice cream, cookies, and cake for lunch.”

For example, when you list what someone ate for lunch, commas help you see each item. The sentence “He ate ice cream, cookies, and cake for lunch.” shows commas doing this job. They let us know exactly what was eaten.

Without commas, it would be a big, confusing mess of words. Interestingly, the last comma before ‘and’ is called the Oxford comma. It’s a tiny detail that’s completely optional to use.

2. Introduce Fronted Sentences

Introducing fronted sentences with commas is like setting the stage before the main act. It gives a heads-up on what’s coming.

“Because I was hungry, I ate pizza.”

In the sentence “Because I was hungry, I ate pizza,” the comma after “hungry” acts like a gentle pause. It separates the reason from the action.

This setup helps readers understand the cause and effect clearly. Fronted sentences often start with words like “because,” “although,” or “while.”

3. Introduce Fronted Adverbials

Introducing fronted adverbials with commas is like using a spotlight to highlight the start of an action.

“Suddenly, I felt extremely lonely.”

In “Suddenly, I felt extremely lonely,” the comma after “Suddenly” gives a pause. This pause helps emphasize the suddenness of the feeling.

Fronted adverbials set the scene or describe how, when, or where something happens. The comma makes sure this scene setting doesn’t get lost in the main action.

4. Separate Embedded Clauses

Separating embedded clauses highlights extra information. It does this by sandwiching a clause between two commas.

“My car, which is very old, broke down today.”

Take “My car, which is very old, broke down today.” The commas around “which is very old” act like parentheses. They show this is additional, not the main story.

Without these commas, the sentence might blend into one confusing piece. It’s interesting how commas can separate yet connect ideas at the same time.

5. Introduce Speech

Introducing speech with commas opens the dialogue. For instance, let’s use the following sentence as an example “The young man yelled, “watch out!””

The young man yelled, “watch out!”

The comma after “yelled” is the cue. It signals that what follows is exactly what was said. It brings conversations to life by turning words into voices. It works for both “say” and “tell” as well.

Without this comma, it would be harder to tell where the yelling ends and the speech begins. This small comma turns reading into listening. We suddenly hear the young man’s warning.

6. Compound Sentences

Let’s use this as an example, “I was broke, and I could not afford lunch” shows this well. The comma before “and” links two related ideas.

“I was broke, and I could not afford lunch.”

Each part could stand alone, but the comma ties them together. Using commas in compound sentences is like connecting two mini-stories with a bridge.

If there wasn’t a comma, the two parts might seem rushed or less connected. This reminds me that also conditional sentences use commas to show situations and their possible outcomes.

How To Use Commas in the English Language

Commas guide us through lists, highlight extra details, introduce speech, and connect ideas. Each use shows how commas shape our understanding.

Remembering these six ways to use commas can turn your writing from good to great. So, the next time you write, think of commas as your helpful guides.

Gerunds and infinitives are special ways to use verbs in English. Gerunds end in “-ing” and act like nouns. For example, “Swimming is fun.” Infinitives are the basic form of a verb and usually start with “to.” Like in “I like to run.”

What Is a Gerund?

A gerund is a verb form that ends in “-ing” and works as a noun in a sentence. For example, in “Running is fun,” “running” is the gerund. It takes an action, like running, and turns it into a thing we can talk about.

An infinitive is the basic form of a verb that usually starts with “to,” like “to play” or “to see.” Infinitives are useful because they help us express ideas in a simple way.
When To Use Infinitives

Infinitives are perfect for expressing a purpose or reason behind an action. They also come into play when talking about likes and dislikes. For example, “I love to read” or “He hates to wake up early” are clear and direct.

Use infinitives after the following verbs:

Agree – They agree to meet at noon.

Be sure – Be sure to check the weather before you leave.

Choose – She chooses to study abroad for a semester.

Decide – We decided to start our own business.

Expect – I expect to hear from them by tomorrow.

Hope – He hopes to visit Japan next year.

Learn – You’ll learn to appreciate the little things in life.

Would like – I would like to order the steak, please.

When To Use Both Gerunds and Infinitives

Some verbs let you use either a gerund or an infinitive right after them, and it doesn’t change the meaning much. For instance, saying “I like swimming” or “I like to swim” both show you enjoy the activity of swimming.

When talking about what you prefer to do, like saying “I prefer reading” or “I prefer to read,” both ways work fine. The difference is really small, more about how the action is viewed than what the action is.

Use either gerunds or infinitives after the following verbs:

Begin

Continue

Like

Hate

Love

Prefer

Start

Example Gerund: I love learning about our world.
Example Infinitive: I love to learn about our world.

Gerunds vs Infinitives

Gerunds and infinitives are both important in how we talk about actions. Here’s a recap of when to use gerunds and infinitives.

Sentence

Gerund

Infinitive

I feel like going to see a comedy this evening.

✓

We hope to study Spanish in school next semester.

✓

She decided not to go to the mall after school.

✓

He dislikes watching horror movies when he is home alone.

✓

So, remember. Gerunds, which end in “-ing,” are good for mentioning activities, like hobbies. Infinitives, which start with “to,” are great for talking about what we want to do or why we do something.

Nominalization in English is when we turn other words, like verbs or adjectives, into nouns. Sometimes you can use either without changing the meaning much.

Do you have any questions about gerunds and infinitives? Don’t hesitate to ask in the comment section below. And remember, if gerunds and infinitives were in a race, the infinitive would say, “To finish,” but the gerund would be “running” the whole time.

Adjectives help us describe things. They can tell us how big, small, fast, or slow something is. For example, a fast runner. But sometimes, we need to compare things. That’s where comparative and superlative adjectives come in.

Comparative adjectives show the difference between two things. Like when we say a cheetah is faster than a horse. Superlative adjectives help us see who’s at the top or bottom of a group. They tell us who’s the fastest, the slowest, or the tallest.

Comparative Adjectives

A comparative adjective compares two things or people. It shows who has more or less of a quality. We often add “er” to the end of the word, or use “more” before it. For example, “taller” or “more interesting.”

“The rabbit is faster than the turtle.”

It’s like looking at a rabbit and a turtle and deciding which one is faster. So, when we talk about two things, we use comparative adjectives to see how they stack up against each other. This is an example of using “-er”.

“A car is more expensive than a motorcycle.”

Using “more” makes a comparison between two things, highlighting a difference in quality or quantity. In the example “A car is more expensive than a motorcycle,” “more” is used to compare the cost of two types of vehicles.

Superlative Adjectives

Superlative adjectives show the most or least of something in a group. We add “est” or use “most” with the word. Like “smallest” or “most interesting.” They tell us who or what is at the top or bottom of a group. For example, in a race, the fastest runner is the one who runs quicker than everyone else.

In the sentence “An astronaut has the coolest job,” the word “coolest” is a superlative adjective. It compares an astronaut’s job to all other jobs and says it’s the most interesting. Notice how this sentence doesn’t use “most coolest”.

“The plane is the most comfortable means of transport.”

“The plane is the most comfortable means of transport” means flying is more comfy than other ways of traveling. “Most” shows flying is at the top for comfort and it’s in the superlative form.
Today, let’s explore sentence structures, which range from simple to compound-complex. Sentence structures come in four main types, each building on the other in complexity. Let’s start with the most basic one – simple sentences.

Example Sentence Types By Structure

Here are some quick examples with sentence types:

Simple Sentences: Anna eats a lollipop.

Compound Sentences: Anna eats lollipops but Jamie eats fruits.

Complex Sentences: Although Anna eats a lollipop, Jamie eats fruits.

Compound-complex Sentences: While Anna eats lollipops, Jamie eats fruits, but Matt only eats bread.

Let’s go through each type of sentence with more detail.

Simple Sentence Types

Simple sentences are straightforward and concise. They contain just one independent clause, meaning they have one subject and one verb.

They express a complete thought without commas separating compound elements. Simple sentences are clear and direct. For instance, “The sun rises.”

Each simple sentence stands alone in its meaning. Simple sentences are powerful in their simplicity. But they can pack a punch with a few words.

“The dog barks.”

Compound sentences connect two ideas. They use conjunctions like “and,” “but,” or “so.” This makes them great for showing contrast or adding information.

Each clause could stand as a sentence on its own. Yet, when joined, they share a closer relationship. The conjunction is like the glue holding compound sentences together.

Common conjunctions are “for”, “and”, “nor”, “but”, “or”, “yet”, and “so”. They also use conjunctive adverbs like “however”, “therefore”, or a semicolon. It also includes conditional sentences.

Complex Sentence Types

Complex sentences add more depth to writing. They combine an independent clause with one or more dependent clauses.

These clauses connect sentences with words like “because,” “although,” or “when.” This structure adds layers of meaning. Complex sentences reveal cause and effect, conditions, or contrasts.

They’re key for detailed explanations and the dependent clause cannot stand alone. Complex sentences need the main clause to make complete sense.

Compound Complex Sentence Types

Compound-complex sentences mix the qualities of compound and complex sentences. This means they have at least two independent clauses and one dependent clause combining several ideas.

Compound-complex sentences can illustrate detailed relationships and conditions. This makes this type of sentence structure perfect for conveying complex thoughts with clarity.

These sentences use conjunctions and subordinating conjunctions to connect clauses. Their structure allows for a nuanced expression of ideas, adding depth and variety.

Sentence Types by Structure

Understanding sentence structure enhances our writing and communication. We can express ideas engagingly by mixing simple, compound, complex, and compound-complex sentences.

First, simple sentences say one thing clearly. Next, compound sentences connect two ideas with words like “and” or “but”. Then, complex sentences add details with words like “because” or “although”. Finally, compound-complex sentences mix these styles.

A prefix comes before the root of the word. For example, “unhappy” uses “un-” to mean not happy.

Suffixes go at the end and can change a word’s job in a sentence. Like “playful,” where “-ful” shows a quality of being full of play.

So, prefixes change what a word means, and suffixes change what a word does.

Common Prefixes

Prefixes are small but mighty parts of language that we attach to the beginning of words. These prefixes can turn a word into its opposite, show a direction, or indicate a number.

Here are some of the most common prefixes in the English language.

This table lists common prefixes, meanings, and examples.

Prefix

Meaning

Examples

Anti-

against

antidote

Di-

opposite

defrost

Dis-

not/opposite of

disapprove

En-/Em-

cause to

encode/embrace

For-

before

forecast

In-/Im-

not

incomplete/imperfect

Il-/Ir-

not

illegal, irresponsible

Inter

between/among

interaction

Mid-

middle

midday

Mid-

wrongly

misunderstanding

Non-

not

nonsense

Over-

over

overreaction

Pre-

before

predetermined

Re-

again

rearrange

Semi-

half

semicircle

Sub-

under

submarine

Super

above

superiority

Trans-

across

transform

Un-

not

unkind

Under-

under

underdeveloped

Common Suffixes

Common suffixes are the finishing touches that change how a word works in a sentence. They transform verbs into nouns, adjectives into adverbs, or give new qualities to words.

Here’s a table with the suffix, meaning, and example:

Suffix

Meaning

Examples

-able/-ible

able to be

suitable/visible

-al/ial

having characteristics of

personal/influential

-ed

past tense verb

skipped

-en

made of

wooden

-er (comparative)

comparative

older

-er (one who)

one who

carpenter

-est

comparative

biggest

-ful

full of

beautiful

-ic

having characteristics of

iconic

-ing

present participle verb

shopping

ion/-tion

act/process

occasion/attraction

-ation/-ition

act/process

starvation/contrition

-ity/-ty

state of

scarcity/cruelty

-ive/-active/-itive

adjective from a noun

destructive/initiative/fugitive

-less

without

careless

-ly

characteristic of

quickly

-ment

action or process

achievement

-ness

state of/condition of

forgiveness

-ous/eous/ious

possessing the qualities of

famous/courteous/suspicious

-s/-es

more than one

shoes/dresses

-y

characterized by

dirty

Suffixes come at the end of words. These little endings can help us express actions, qualities, states of being, and much more.

“Antidisestablishmentarianism” is one of the longest words with both prefixes and suffixes.
